Changing the Lens workshop

Changing the Lens workshop

I have always thought of myself as an inclusive wedding and portrait photographer. Back in August 2021 I attended the Changing the Lens workshop, an inclusivity workshop for photographers and wedding industry folks. As a cis, white settler I learnt so much from this workshop and really gave some wake up calls in gender, disability, race and body identity.
The workshop was born by Amber from Honey & Lux photography in 2020 when a videographer in Woodstock, ON refused service to an LGBTQAI+ couple.
As I’m going through my workbook to write this blog, I am literally making changes to my agreements and questionnaires from the things I learnt. Since the workshop I have stood up for what I believe in, for example when I styled session wanted to use two cis models to pose as a lesbian couple I said I wouldn’t photograph it and explained why. I completely recommend that everyone in the wedding industry (not just photographers) should attend this workshop. I even think that any business owner could learn a lot from it!

I ended up photographing a huge 3416 images in just a couple of hours, doing a bunch of silent mirrorless rapid bursts to make sure to capture the perfect expression- a technique I learnt while doing the mentorship last year with Two Mann Studios. This meant that it has sat at the bottom of my edit list since then, but so happy that I was able to get stuck into them last week. These are my favourites, enjoy!
