I loved looking back through Laura and Alex’s engagement photographs shot around this time last year at the Old Court House. Excited for their wedding today!

A friend of mine, Erica, was having a party, and had invited a coworker of hers, Dean, to DJ it. He came, and brought a friend, Alex, with him. I knew Dean from previous parties, and was hanging out with him, asking him how the music equipment worked, when all of a sudden the equipment loses power and the music for the whole party stops. The entire party stopped and stared at me, and I looked at Dean with a horrified look as if I’d just broken his DJ equipment. He laughed and pointed out that the power cord had been knocked out, and the music was soon back on. After the embarrassment subsided, I realized it was Dean’s friend, Alex, who had knocked out the power cord, so I went over and joked about how he let me take the fall for the whole mishap. He cheekily responds, how else was he supposed to get my attention? We hit it off immediately. We talked for hours that night and had an instant connection. I think we both knew that night that we had something special.

Funny enough, Alex had seen a photo of me on his friend Dean’s facebook page before we met and told him he thought I was cute. When Dean was asked to DJ the party, Alex initially didn’t feel like going out. Dean mentioned that the cute girl from facebook would be going, and Alex changed his mind. Of course, when I first met him I thought he was very cute and charming. I was smitten.

For two years of our relationship, we had to do long distance. I was going to law school in England, and Alex was going to school here. We had talked about marriage for awhile, but we always figured it didn’t make any sense until I came home for good. Those two years were incredibly difficult, but in my last year we decided to buy a house, and it made it that much more exciting to come home between terms. Two days before we moved into the house, on my birthday, we went out for dinner. Alex took me to my favourite restaurant and then we went for drinks and to play pool at a pub downtown. After a great night with lots of laughs, we came back to my office to call a cab. While we waited, Alex went to use the restroom, and when he came back he told me he had a birthday present for me. I closed my eyes and when I opened them, he was on one knee with my dream ring. I of course said yes, and called my parents who had apparently known for 4 months! Although I knew we were going to get engaged eventually, I thought he would want to wait until I was officially back from England for good, so it definitely made the timing a surprise.

Not one specific memory together, but I loved our time living in Halifax. We went out East to go to school, and it was such an amazing few years. We met so many wonderful people, had some great memories, and loved the city so much. It was a unique experience we got to share together. We got to move away together and experience a new city and a new way of life away from our family and friends back home. We were both very sad to leave Halifax as we have some incredible memories there.

Laura: I love that Alex is so incredibly supportive. No matter what it is I’m struggling with, he is always there to cheer me on. When I moved to England to go to law school, even though he didn’t want me to go, he encouraged me and always told me that I could get through it. He fought through a long distance relationship with me as well, which is not easy at all. Though school, exams, health scares, he is always there and always supporting and comforting me.

Alex: What do I love about LauraIt can take a lifetime and more than a few strokes of good luck to find a woman like Laura. I was lucky enough to find her relatively early in my life, sparking the beginning of the best years a man could ask for in my early twenties. She’s always been there, through the uncomfortable, the tragic and the best of times. As beautiful and funny as she was the night I first noticed her in a crowded room. She’s the most supportive and inspiring woman you could ever ask to spend a lifetime with, and not a day goes by that I fail to realize how lucky I am to have found her.

I want our wedding to be fun and enjoyable for everyone. It is so rare to get my entire family all in one place (it’s huge) , so having them all together to celebrate us is so exciting for me. Alex and I are pretty laid-back, so my biggest goal is just for everyone to have fun. , I want our wedding to be fun and enjoyable for everyone. We love the style of wedding photography you guys do. I like that there are posed shots, and shots with dramatic lighting and backgrounds, but there are also lots of candids. My favourite photos are candid shots of people just enjoying time with each other laughing, joking, having fun. I feel like you guys also like to focus on that as well and capture the emotions of the day well.
