Film photographer London Ontario

Taking a break from the best of 2024 blogs today to write about one of my top 10 memories of 2024, my first Film camera wedding! It’s a bit strange that I am literally surrounded by 50+ film cameras as I write this in my office, but that I rarely get the opportunity to use them as everything I have ever been paid for has been using digital cameras. I actually started out with film cameras, I only took one digital course the whole time I was in university. I was so thankful when I was contacted by Kaley and Eddie to see if I wasn’t to photograph their wedding held on her families property outside of St Thomas. After chatting about their Bridgerton inspired big day, I knew this would be the perfect opportunity for me to learn and experiment. It was the first time in many years where I took a backseat and too a second shooter role taking direction from Dawn Bowman which was interesting and made it more of a styled shoot.

As Kaley is a model she had told us that she wanted the posed photographs to have a very dramatically posed feel to them and below are some of my favourites. I learnt a lot including that I would make sure to get my negatives back from All things film– we are so lucky in London that we have this local business developing and supporting all things film! I also learnt that I would likely eliminate any of my Lomography cameras from my bag, and just buy a  more automatic Canon film camera- I thankfully borrowed from my friend Rebecca Nash Photography which can be used with any of my digital lenses. For editing I had a hard time letting go of that I always strive to have the most realistic skin tones, it just wasn’t achievable with the fun expired film I was using. It was a big learning curve to par down the shooting I do to just a couple of shots per pose, and less candid moments captured which is not how my brain usually works. I would be interested in seeing how a hybrid film/digital wedding would go- it certainly need to be booked as such from the beginning so if film photography is something you are interested in, get in contact!
