Choosing your family photographer is an important decision as these are precious memories to be treasured. I have over 12 years experience photographing families of all ages, sizes, abilities and personalities. I love to capture a variety of fun, candid and timeless shots and edit with true to life colour which will never age, and give additional copies in trendy filters. Location
Selecting a location for a Family photography session generally comes down to 2 options:
- In Studio which is as simple as it sounds. These sessions are typically more formal and are often based on a theme and include props for the special occasion
- On location sessions are more often than not a bit more relaxed and less posed than In Studio sessions. The location can be your own backyard, a park, or a variety of other fun places.
Time of day
The best time of day for a family photography session is when the children are happiest and most rested. If the family group does not include young children, the hour before sunset can produce some gorgeous golden light in your portraits.
Clothing
The clothing colour usually depends on the season. In general I recommend that you not be too matchy-matchy, but certainly coordinate your colours and be aware of avoiding patterns that clash with one another. I recommend staying away from slogan T-shirts or any really “fad” fashion as it will age your portraits.
Wear clothing that will contrast with your surroundings. For example, if you are doing a woodland shoot don’t wear green, black or dark brown colours.
If you have chosen a rustic location, don’t wear super formal clothing that you might wear in a studio shoot.
Most importantly wear something that fits well and you are comfortable wearing! Other things to think about are wearing clothing that is form fitting- not baggy and not too tight. Having definition in the waist by adding a belt and think about accessories. When viewing your photographs, the eye will be drawn to patterns, lines, lace or textured detail, large chunky accessories, contrast and rich/bold colours. Avoid these things in areas that you don’t want the eye drawn to, and use them in places that you do want the eye to be drawn! It is also important to wear form fitting under garments that will enhance your figure and that will not be seen in your clothing (bra straps etc).

Props
Props for these sessions can certainly be incorporated but are not necessary. If you do want props anything from a simple blanket or chalkboard to a full themed set, this can be used to provide variety and personalization to your portraits.
We love working with themes so if there is a certain theme that would go well with the décor in your home or would help express who you are as a family, be sure to chat with us about how we can bring that into your session.
What to do with the images
Now, you’ve had this wonderful experience and have a bunch of images you know that you will love and treasure of this time in your family’s life. You don’t want these images looked at once digitally and then buried under a mountain of food or pet pictures!
I really love making special collages for family sessions that can be printed in a large size and framed in your home. You can also choose to make a special wood, metal or canvas print. A professionally produced album which can be an excellent way to preserve the photos for treasured family heirlooms, can also make wonderful gifts!
Other tips
- Nothing is worse than a sick or over-tired child, so if this happens chat with me as soon as there is any signs so that rescheduling can be a possibility.
- We have lots of tricks for getting lovely smiles but if there is certain toy or song that gets great smiles, be sure to bring that along.
- Moms deserve to be pampered! It is a great time to get your hair/nails/makeup done and enjoy a date night afterwards!
