- Garett was out with his law school class for a Halloween bar night at the Thorny Devil (may it rest in peace). Michelle was supposed to go to Cowboys with her friends but at the last minute decided to go to Thorny Devil. Michelle and her friend got to the bar ahead of their other friends and went to grab a drink. Garett and his buddy from at law school were also at the bar. Garett’s buddy began talking to Michelle’s friend, leaving Garett and Michelle on opposite sides staring at their drinks and not knowing what to do. Garett decided “why the hell not” and went to talk to Michelle. For full information, Garett was dressed as Sponge Bob Squarepants as it was the only costume that he could find as he is terrible at planning things in advance. Michelle was dressed as a sensible fox. Garett and Michelle started talking, yadda, yadda, yadda, the evening ended with an ill-advised, premature wedding proposal by Garett which, luckily, did not scare Michelle away. We went out for dinner together 2 days later and the rest is history.
- Garett – “Hey, she looks pretty!” Michelle – “Why is he asking me if I want a drink when I already have 2?”
- Garett is not a romantic. At all. This was a tough task for him. Michelle had her birthday weekend (which has been reduced from her previous birthday month and, before that, her birthday season) when all of her family would be down. Again, as Garett is not romantic, he went cliché. At this time, Garett was living in Toronto for work. Therefore, we always planned our weekends in advance. As background, Garett hates running. Hates it. Garett was hoping to propose to Michelle on a hike as we enjoyed hiking together. But he hates running. In a stroke of genius, Garett asked Michelle if, when he is home for her birthday, she wants to go for a run on the trails, with the thought being he can get Michelle alone. Idiot. Michelle is immediately suspicious. Garett, realizing the error of his ways, quickly corrects himself, reestablishes his hatred of running, and instead asks if she wants to go for a hike on the trails. Too late. Garett may have well have mounted the ring on a flashing neon sign prior to going on that hike. Long story short, Garett got down on one knee, cobbled together some words that he thought were really romantic, went to put the ring on her finger, realized it was too small for her abnormally large knuckles, and went home and presented her family with a ring that she held in her hand as opposed to on her finger. They were still happy. We told my family later on. They too were happy. Everyone was happy.
